Project — Look. Spot. Score.
Słowidok is our photo-based word game. Players see the same photograph and have a limited time to name the objects and details they can spot. Observation, vocabulary and an eye for detail all count.
A round moves from a photo preview through entering answers to a summary of words and scores. The server sets the timing of each stage and checks answers against an approved dictionary for the photo. A word's value depends on that particular photo, and each player can score for it once per round.
You can join as a guest without creating an account. An account unlocks global leaderboards and lets you suggest missing words for past photos. The app supports Polish and English, photo zoom and four colour themes.
Słowidok is available on iOS via the App Store and on Android via Google Play. The project includes a Flutter app for Android and iOS, a backend and a website explaining the game. The screenshots show a Polish development version.
Scope of work
An Android and iOS app, an API with a round engine and scoring, a panel for managing photos and dictionaries, and a game website in Polish and English.
- Shared photos, synchronised rounds and server-validated scoring
- Guest play, player accounts and leaderboards
- Polish and English versions with four themes
- A panel for preparing photos, moderating words and configuring the game
Technology and implementation
The app was built with Flutter and Dart, using BLoC for state management. Laravel provides the API and enforces game rules, while PostgreSQL stores photos, dictionaries and scores. Redis handles job queues for round cycles and leaderboard updates. The presentation website uses Blade and CSS.
